Diamond Jubilee 2012 Events
Queen Elizabeth ll celebrates her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. She came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897. To mark this historic occasion, there will be a special bank holiday this year. The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5 June 2012. Many local events will be held but the following are exciting highlights:
DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT The world is expected to cast its eye on Windsor Castle when it hosts a three-day celebration in May for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Celebrations will take on an international theme humbly entitled ‘The World Comes to Windsor’ commemorating over 250 state and commonwealth visits The Queen has made during her reign. There will be entertainment in the form of musicians and dancers as well as military and horse displays, with more than 500 horses and 800 performers taking part in the celebrations. Over 17 countries will take part and include acts like the Oklahoma Cowboys and Cattle, The New Zealand Military Band and Maasai warriors. Simon Brooks Ward, director and producer said: “We are enormously excited by the plans for The Diamond Jubilee Pageant and have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill for the event across the globe. To put it into context, Queen Victoria was the only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee in 1897, some 114 years ago, so for this to be happening within our lifetimes is a truly unique and historic occasion.” The Queen will make a special appearance on the last evening of activities. Tickets for the pageant which will run on Thursday, May 10, Friday, May 11 and Sunday, May 13 are priced between £30 and £100. They can be bought from www.diamond-jubilee-pageant.com , by calling in at Windsor Information Centre within Windsor Royal Shopping Centre or by phoning 0844 581 4970 or for group bookings, 0800 358 0058.
THAMES DIAMOND JUBILEE PAGEANT The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant celebrates The Queen’s sixty years of service by magnificently bringing the Thames to life in a glorious jamboree that will go down in the history books as a day to remember. On Sunday 3rd June 2012, The Spirit of Chartwell will have top billing as the Royal Barge, carrying The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family in celebration of her sixty year reign. The first sight of the Royal Barge on the Thames will be one of the most highly anticipated moments of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. The Pageant, one of this year’s most exciting events, is unprecedented as the largest flotilla to be assembled on the river in modern times. As a major focal point of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend, the afternoon of Sunday 3rd June will see up to a thousand boats muster on the river Thames with a million spectators expected along the route. It will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river with rowing boats, working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes. Broadcast pictures will be shown live around the world as the impressive flotilla passes down the river with bells tolling, music playing, geysers spraying and whistles blowing. It will be a day out to remember for the whole family as parks, riverbanks and bridges will become viewing positions, with extra entertainment planned for areas by the Thames. Participating boats will carry passengers.
BBC CONCERT at BUCKINGHAM PALACE Monday 4th June, 2012 There will be a televised Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace with tickets being available to UK residents by public ballot. The musical programme for the concert is still being planned and is expected to feature British and Commonwealth musicians. Details on how to apply for the concert will be available in due course. This event is being organised by the BBC.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons: A network of 2,012 Beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth. As in 2002, The Queen will light the National Beacon. The beacons project is being organised by Diamond Jubilee Beacons Ltd.
Tuesday 5th June, 2012 Service of Thanksgiving and Carriage Procession: There will be a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral and a formal carriage Procession by The Queen.
Windsor Castle Photographic Exhibition
Sixty photographs of Her Majesty The Queen, including the work of leading press photographers of the past six decades, will go on display on 4 February at The Drawings Gallery at Windsor Castle to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. The exhibition presents a portrait of The Queen’s reign as captured in fleeting moments on both official occasions and at relaxed family gatherings. For centuries the formal painted portrait projected the public face of kings and queens. With the advent of photography, the boundaries between the officially approved and the spontaneously captured image of the monarch were irreversibly blurred. Today, through the reach of modern media, the image of The Queen is familiar to millions around the world.
Her Majesty’s reign has spanned the appointment of 12 British Prime Ministers and 12 Presidents of the United States. Photographs taken around the United Kingdom show The Queen’s personal involvement in the life of the nation through her many regional visits, most often accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh. Her Majesty has travelled more than any other sovereign in history and since 1952 has undertaken over 250 official visits to 131 different countries. Colourful photographs document trips overseas, including a visit to Mexico in 1975, to the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu in 1982, India in 1983 and to Canada in 2010.
Over the past 60 years photographers have recorded The Queen pursuing her personal interests in off-duty moments, particularly her life-long love of equestrianism. The Queen’s love of animals is also well documented in the exhibition. On 25 January 1959 Her Majesty is working at her desk with a corgi at her feet; in August 1974 she arrives at Aberdeen Airport with several of her dogs for the start of her holiday at Balmoral in Scotland; and in May 1998 The Queen is reunited with Watney, one of the dorgis she has bred. The exhibition is part of a visit to Windsor Castle & is included in the price of admission.
